The Rubicon Toolbox Grading Evaluation Tool allows you to:
  • Plot detailed grading analyses along with grading specification envelopes.
  • Quickly analyze the particle size distribution (i.e. grading) of a material.
The Grading Evaluation Report plots a measured grading with a selected grading envelope, which typically represents a material specification. As such, the Grading Evaluation Report is ideal to check the conformance of a material to a specification, or to determine which parts of a materials grading are not within specification.

Both the sieve sizes and the specification envelopes are determined by the user, in a template (Excel Spreadsheet), and imported into the Grading Evaluation Tool. You can define as many specifications as you want, and then compare your gradings to each specification to see which material specification fits your grading the closest.

The gradings are then plotted with the grading envelope.

Getting Started

The Grading Evaluation Tool is accessed through the Reporting Tools icon on the Rubicon Toolbox Online Tools.

If this is the first time you are using the Online Tools, you will need to set up a project by clicking on the Manage Projects link and create a new project. Alternatively, you can use an existing project if one has already been created.

Once you have created a new project or selected an existing project, click on the Reporting Tools icon and select Grading Evaluation Tool from the list. A Grading Analysis page will open.

To start, download the example template, enter the relevant data and save the template. Do not change the layout and format in the template.

Follow the instructions provided to complete the Excel template. Key elements to note in the preparation of the template are:
  • Each grading is shown in a single row. You need to include a “unique key” so the software can distinguish the gradings. The title and location will be shown at the top of the Grading report. To add a new grading or grading envelope, copy down one of the existing rows and simply change the cell values as needed. This way, the format of the import template will be retained and import errors will be minimized. Ensure there are no blank rows between gradings.
  • The sieve sizes shown in the column headers are read in during importing and thus you can specify your own sieve sizes. The sieve sizes specified in the material specification envelopes need not be the same as those specified for the material gradings. Ensure there are no blank cells for the sieve sizes in Row 8.
  • If you do not have measured values at some sieve sizes, simply leave the value in the percentage passing cell blank for that sieve and grading. Do not enter a zero, as this will distort the grading graph.
  • The Specifications sheet gives grading specification envelopes. Typical, and widely used, envelopes are shown with a reference. You can add your won by following the pattern of the gradings given. Ensure there are no blank rows between gradings. Do not change the name of the Specifications worksheet.

Running the Analysis

Once you have completed the template, proceed with the following steps to complete the analysis from the Online Tools, Grading Evaluation Tool.

By default, the Grading Analysis Report will display in Single View, i.e. you will be able to view one Grading at a time. For guidelines on viewing multiple Gradings at a time, use the Multiple View.

Note, for a new analysis, the Save option is initially inactive. Once an analysis is saved for the first time using Save As, the save option becomes active. To overwrite an existing saved analysis, click on Save. To save as an alternative analysis, click on Save As. Alternatively, you can clone your analysis, from the Online Tools page, and rename it as needed.

The report can be copied to the clipboard by right clicking on the report and selecting Copy Image or Save image as. The image can then be inserted into a document of your choice (Word, Excel, etc.). Alternatively, click on Export To Word/Export to Excel to download your reports to a word/excel document.
